she wrote her first song by the time she was fifteen. her album happiness came out just around the same time we were graduating-high-school suckers (1994) paying more attention to the pearl jams & gasp! another lisa who recieved much more attention than she deserved.

over the course of her career she's worked with john mellencamp, simple minds, neil finn, and david bowie; has gone from her own label to capitol to recently michael gira's young gods records, and has since settled into a comfortable anonyminity in a los angeles bookstore.

"into oblivion" is from in the mayble world (young gods records, 2006) and stands out for the harmonium driving the song. it's quiet & feels chilly like a stroll through woods in the winter just before a snow. sappy, yes. but it fits december.

she recently recorded a session on wnyc's sunday night program spinning on air.

dork of the week dept: worst resume ever

wall street forwarded this dork of the week's video resume as an example of how not to present yourself to a prospective employer.

the video showcases aleksey vayner lifting weights, ballroom dancing, playing tennis, skiing and ultimately, breaking a tower of bricks with his hand. all the while, he discusses his philosophy of success: “if you’re going to work, work. if you’re going to train, train. if you’re going to dance, then DANCE, but do it with PASSION.”

by friday afternoon, both the cover letter and resume - which includes a link to the video, titled “impossible is nothing” - had circulated among employees at lehman brothers, goldman sachs, j.p. morgan chase & co., credit suisse group, wachovia, etc.

oh. it also turns out that his resume is largely forged.

tunes dept: decemberists preview

there was chatter when the decemberists signed a major label deal with capitol records after the release of '05's piqaresque, along the oh-no! lines that often accompanies that kind of news. however! the first album with capital, called the crane's wife comes out on october 3rd &, having heard great things, @udio thunderdome dug up a preview.

while much of the album has a faster, slightly more guitar-driven sound than what we've heard from them before. although "yankee bayonet (i will be home then)," a duet with laura veirs about a post-civil war soldier, nicely contrasts its neighboring songs. veirs' lilty voice compliments the song's overall shanty/folksy jangle.
